    Roulette Strategies

There are a lot of people, like scientist, mathematical students or professors and even fortunetellers who are claiming they have the right system to beat the casino by playing Roulette. Hundreds of books have been written about this.

Two famous system are based on wagering, Martingale and Paroli. Martingale’s system followers will bet some fixed sum, say $1, to begin with, and continue to bet that amount each time your win. But each time you lose, double your bet the next time. No matter when you quit and go home, just so long as it is following a win, you will be ahead of the game. Your profit will be as many dollars as you have had wins.

To play an anti-martingale you select the number of successive wins you are prepared to gamble for, let’s say eleven. You quit as soon as you lose once – or when you have won eleven times in a row if this is your lucky day. If you lose, you lose $1. If you win, you win $2.047.

But if a waterproof system would exist, every single casino was bankrupt now. If you try to use a system like this, it can be stopped because you hit the table limit for instance.

    House Edge
The house edge at Roulette can be calculated using the ‘Expectation Formula’, which is:
Expectation = [Number of the favourable results / Total number of the possible results] X
The payoff for the favourable result + [Number of the unfavourable results / Total number of the possible results] X The bet.
So, if you wager $1, your expectation, in terms of dollars at American Roulette, is:
    Straight up (one number bet) = (1/38) x 35 + (37/38) x (-1) = -2/38 = -0.0526 or (-5.26%)

    American Roulette
The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1.

    European roulette
The European roulette wheel with its single 0 has a house edge of only 2.70%. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets paid 35 to 1.
